Where are all the MiFiLM filmmakers?

July 2021                                           Issue  9                 Vol.1

New York vs Los Angeles

What's it looking like over there LA? πŸ‘€   No. We're not trading our baconeggandcheese for a breakfast burrito (or whatever the heck ya'll eat). But we are setting up shop.  Keep reading for more!

  • Jayboi Adams received TWO offers on his first digital art piece HUETOPIA for our fundraising exhibit "Artists Are Essential!" Check it out now on Opensea.io! We're πŸ‘ŒπŸΎ (this much) closer to investing in a fully funded original short film, for and  by MiFILM members.

  • Please welcome MiFILM's newest members: Maya Cade, Marlon Bradley, Ray Archie, Darnell Dudley, Brandon Gates, Erik D, and Kennard Blackwell!

  • Trevor Zhou is over the white supremacy in Hollywood and has some ideas on how MiFilm can enrich diversity by connecting people of the global majority to mainstream professionals in LA.

Disability Pride is about inclusion, awareness, and visibility - the same CTA's that moves the needle on all equal rights initiatives. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. Enacted in 1990, the ADA was intended to protect the civil rights of millions of Americans. In honor of the 25th anniversary of ADA, Mayor Bill de Blasio (D-NYC) has declared July as "Disability Pride Month". MiFiLM shares stories about real people living life in their own words. We are also proud to honor the goal of the ADA by building a community that eradicates the homogenous nature of film production sets.

Some disabilities are invisible, and not all People living with differing-abilities consider themselves disabled. I'm proud that we continue to allow our community the space to be authentically themselves, so that we can learn how to best show up for each other. My own needs differ from many of our members, but there is one thing we can always use, your support. There are many stories brewing here, that need a little nudge, and some much needed visibility to help them get made!

Help us, help our members, share their stories of those voices unheard. Become a MiFilm partner today by emailing me at [email protected]. ☺️

Announcements

We welcome Trevor Zhou, who will be spearheading our efforts on the West Coast!

Ann Arbor --

"It’s an honor and privilege to join the MiFilm team! As the west coast lead, I’m looking forward to helping expand opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers on the west coast and creating an inclusive space to encourage thoughtful discussion about the intersection of film and social change. I am an advocate for inclusivity and representation - this means hiring those who are historically excluded both in front of and behind the camera, choosing untold stories from underrepresented communities and collaborating with these voices to tell stories authentically. I believe that this approach to inclusion can change the traditionally less than diverse media landscape. Looking forward to meeting everyone!"
